Meet Joanna

Joanna is a rising 5th grader in Pamlico County and has been involved with CISNC for one year. Joanna was referred to CIS because she was missing many assignments and had behavioral issues in class. Thankfully, Joanna formed a wonderful bond with her CIS Student Support Specialist, Ashley Cephas, and is working hard to implement the strategies Ashley is laying out for her.

Ashley discovered the underlying cause of Joanna’s behavioral issues are struggles in the home: Joanna and her two older siblings all live with their grandmother who has a hard time keeping up with Joanna’s schoolwork and behavior issues.

Since connecting with Ashley, Joanna is putting a great effort into changing her patterns. Thanks to the mindfulness tips and social/emotional support she’s receiving though CISNC, Joanna is learning impulse control, and she’s also working on getting her assignments done on time each week.

Joanna struggled during Covid remote learning, but Ashely feels Joanna will greatly benefit from the in-person support and instruction she can provide in the coming school year. Thanks to a grant we received from Verizon, CISNC has been able to purchase Personal Protective Equipment that will allow Ashley and other Student Support Specialists to safely connect with students in-person!
