Zayda is a bright senior at Southern Nash Senior High School who is set to graduate in June. Her smile and energy light up the room. Behind her smile is a story of perseverance, and a supportive CIS Specialist, Mr. Williams, who served as a beacon of light through hard times.
Zayda moved to NC with her aunt after losing her parents. In a new state, her aunt knew she would need a community of support to help her adjust to a new school and ensure she stayed on track academically. “One thing that’s special about Zayda is her consideration for others” says Mr. Williams. “She could be having a bad day, but would still do her best to nurture and care for other students.”
This spring, Zayda was invited to speak to community supporters and business leaders at our annual Have A Heart breakfast. Her message was clear, the support she received from CIS was critical to her success. “CIS to me means family because of Mr. Williams’ support and the heart he has for us all” she said. “I truly look up to him as a father figure and someone that I can always rely on.”
The support Zayda received from CIS helped her develop a plan after graduation. Although she is not rushing the process, she is excited about her plans for the future. After graduating, Zayda will be attending East Carolina University to receive her degree in Architectural Engineering. After earning her bachelor’s degree, she would like to further her education by earning a Master of Science in Architectural Engineering.
“CIS has always encouraged me to chase after who I want to become. I am so grateful for the family I developed through CIS, and thankful to my Specialist, Mr. Williams, who I know will always have my back.”
