Jackson Glass’ teachers describe him as a bright spot at Wilkes Central High School. He is a positive presence in class, on the football field, and in the community. When he enrolled in CISNC’s Jobs for North Carolina’s Graduates (JNCG) program, he had a clear vision for what he wanted for his future — to serve his community by following in his father’s footsteps and becoming a firefighter. “It was Coach Foster who brought me into this program, and I’ve learned to really enjoy it.” Coach Dustin Foster is the JNCG Specialist for the school and calls Jackson one of the highlights of his classroom.
Like other JNCG students, Jackson had his own challenges to overcome. During his senior year he lost his father — his hero and the cornerstone of his life. The loss left him unsure of what the future would hold and what direction his life would take. Through the help of JNCG, he was able to regain his footing.
As graduation comes closer, Jackson has found his place as a volunteer fireman with the Broadway Fire Department, honoring his father as he pursues his own dreams. “I’m going to go to Wilkes Community College for two years and then I’m transferring up to Appalachian State to get my bachelor’s degree.” Jackson plans on majoring in criminal justice to pursue a career in law enforcement. His ultimate goal is to become a member of the State Bureau of Investigation while working as a volunteer firefighter to honor his father.
Jackson is a bright young man with a bright future ahead of him and a clear plan to get there. The JNCG program has helped him take accountability for his future to make it the best possible. He says that others can benefit from the program just as he has. “You get to learn more about college and careers, and you get to do work that really helps you in the future instead of just doing work for a grade right now in high school… So doing this really propels you, prepares you for the future.”
