Setting students up for success after graduation is one goal of Communities In Schools of North Carolina and the Jobs for North Carolina’s Graduates (JNCG) program. For one Robeson County student, working with his JNCG Specialist, Mr. Moorison, helped him develop a plan for the future.
“I never really had many options,” remarked Angel Locklear of Purnell Swett High School. Angel was recommended to the JNCG program to help build his confidence. Kendall Morrison, his JNCG Specialist, says that despite being naturally shy, Angel is very personable. In just a single semester, Angel has gone from a shy student to a trustworthy, task-driven, classroom leader. “His growing confidence is visible in the way he interacts with others and takes initiative during group activities.” Morrison said.
After graduation, Angel plans on enlisting in the Navy as a mechanic, but he has set his sights high. His goal is to become a Special Warfare Combat-Craft Crewman, the mechanics who support the Navy SEALs and take care of their specialized vehicles.
“I’m planning on doing a full 20 (years) so I will get a full retirement payout of that. After the Navy, probably start my own automotive business,” Angel said when asked about his plans for the future. He believes he will improve himself through his tours in the Navy, learning skills that will serve him well in civilian life.
