Meet Jadence

CIS Heart Breakfast-FM Guest(24)

Communities In Schools (CIS) Specialists work inside schools every day to remove barriers students face to success. No two students are alike—that’s why Specialists build trust through one-on-one relationships to create individualized plans of support.

Jadence joined CIS during a difficult time. She had just transferred to Lewis Chapel Middle School and was dealing with life-altering news. She held her emotions in, lashed out at others, and her grades suffered. “I was a hothead, so I didn’t really like talking to anybody.” Says Jadence. Ms. Bain, her CIS Specialist, worked on building a relationship with Jadence, creating a judgment-free space where she felt safe, allowing her to come to her when she felt comfortable.

Eventually, Ms. Bain saw her walls come down. Just BEING PRESENT mattered. She soon shared that she recently found out her mom had cancer. “On that day, Jadence needed someone to talk to, someone who she knew cared.” Says Ms. Bain. “I came into her office crying, and she wrapped me up in a hug. That was when I realized it was about more than classwork.” Says Jadence.

With Ms. Bain’s support, Jadence was able to begin focusing on her schoolwork and started making genuine friendships through CIS. She brought her grades up and grew to be an honor roll student. “She’s helped me a lot with my confidence,” Jadence says with a smile. This year, Jadence was invited to speak to community members and supporters at an event, sharing the pivotal role CIS and Ms. Bain played in her success in school.

As Jadence is promoted and heads to high school, she is sad to leave Ms. Bain, but happy to know she can still reach out to her for support. She wants to join the ROTC program in high school and plans to enlist after graduating.

“CIS and my specialist are the best people I have ever met. I started at zero, now I am at 50 and on my way to 100.”
