Communities In Schools of North Carolina Served More Than 90,000 Students For the 2008-2009 School Year

 

Communities In Schools of North Carolina announced that the CIS network in North Carolina served 90,346 youth during the 2008-2009 school year. Of the more than 90,000 students who were eligible:

• 96 percent of potential dropouts stayed in school;
• 93 percent of students were promoted to the next grade level;
• 94 percent of students graduated.

“CISNC and the CIS affiliates in North Carolina everyday work toward surrounding students with the support and encouragement they need to stay in school and succeed,” said Linda Harrill, president and CEO of CISNC. “Thanks to the dedication of staff, local programs and volunteers, we continue our efforts in increasing the number of children who graduate on-time, thereby decreasing the state’s dropout rate. I am proud of the work we have done and will do this upcoming year.”

There are 38 affiliates that make up the CIS network in North Carolina. In additon CISNC provides services to 20 other counties. The CIS network in North Carolina also saw more than 10,000 volunteers donate 261,568 hours of their time in various service activities, which include mentoring, tutoring, organizing events and helping staff.

The CIS network in North Carolina also maintained its fiscal responsibility by helping children succeed in the CIS program for only $201.14 per student. In addition, for every dollar the N.C. General Assembly invested, the CIS network in North Carolina leveraged services valued at $16.78.

Communities In Schools of North Carolina is part of the national CIS organization, the leading dropout prevention non-profit in America. CIS is the only dropout prevention organization that has proven to both decrease drop out rates and increase on-time graduation rates.
