Learn and Serve

Communities In Schools of North Carolina is pleased to announce that we will be the lead agency for the Learn and Serve America school-based grant program. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction designated CISNC to carry out the remaining deliverables in the 2009 – 2010 grant cycle and to serve as the responsible and fiscal agent for the 2010 – 2011 grant awards.

Learn and Serve America in North Carolina will encourage thoughtful K-12 service-learning projects across the state. Projects will address the three goals of the program: participant development, strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement. These goals will be accomplished through partnerships between schools and their communities where the student population is at risk of school dropout. Risk factors for school dropout include low academic achievement, truancy, non-promotion, suspension and expulsion, and poverty. Learn and Serve America resources will promote service-learning as an instructional strategy to enhance teaching practices, student learning and community-based solutions.

We look forward to working with North Carolina schools to expand high-quality service-learning in more K-12 schools. Please read all of the attachments and submit your proposal electronically to requests@cisnc.org by 5:00 p.m. June 30, 2010.
